Why DeAndre Jordan coming to Dallas is unlikely; will the Mavs make a move before the trade deadline?

Newy Scruggs, sports anchor at NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS-TV) and radio host weekly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Radio Sirius XM 213/202 and NBCSportsRadio.com, answered questions recently. Here are some of the highlights:

Question: I know the history, but doesn’t DeAndre Jordan in Dallas still make too much sense?

Scruggs: The Mavs will not be trading for him.

Simple question. If you are DeAndre Jordan, why sign with Dallas?

The Mavericks are rebuilding. Jordan has some interesting decisions to make. Does he want to chase a title right now or is he interested in being a leader on an emerging club?

Jordan sounds good but we must know what his priorities are to see if he is really a good fit in Dallas.

Question: So we’re one day away now… Think the Mavs trade for anybody?

Scruggs: Dallas could make a trade but they will not make a significant deal that will change the season around. A Jason Kidd type trade is not going to happen.

Dallas is rebuilding. Fans just have to accept that.

Question: Who is more valuable to the Mavs right now: Devin Harris or JJ Barea?

Scruggs: Both players are serving as mentors to rookie Dennis Smith, Jr.

I expect both men to have roles with the Mavs when they retire from the NBA.

J.J. Barea when healthy has been the better player this season over Harris.

Question: That was a pretty ugly finish from DSJ the other night… Will it have any lasting ramifications as far as Carlisle playing him late in games?

Scruggs: 82 games. I am not expecting a rookie to play 82 great ones.

Dennis Smith, Jr is learning the NBA game. He is 20 years old. He will have some tough nights.

I feel really good about his future in Dallas and I know Rick Carlisle loves having him.

Question: Is Dirk doing what you expected of him this year or is he performing above or below expectations?

Scruggs: I’m realistic about Dirk Nowitzki. He is an older guy closer to the end of his career and whatever he can give Dallas fans I’m happy to see.

The team is struggling and he really gives fans a good reminder was how good the Mavs used to be.

I’m not looking for him to be an All Star player. I just hope to a see few nights where Dirk can put up 15 or 20 points.
